The Superminx
1966 Hillman - RestorationTo my parents absolute horror, I decided one day to trade my reliable Honda Civic for a half-broken 1966 Hillman Superminx. I knew next to nothing about cars at the time, but I wanted a fun project to see if I could learn the skills to do a full restoration myself.
Armed with a Haynes manual and YouTube, I ended up doing all the work myself: from the mechanical diagnostics to patterning and sewing the interior upholstery, right down to the final body prep and paint job. It was a massive learning curve, but a brilliant project to figure out how to take a classic piece of design apart, understand how it works, and put it back together properly
The 1966 Hillman Super Minx represents a unique era in British industrial design, featuring a body shape influenced by legendary American designer Raymond Loewy. It captures the exact moment post-war British automotive styling was trying to balance traditional European proportions with the optimistic, sharp-edged geometric trends of the Space Age.
